Mara River season

River crossings are among the most sought-after migration sightings, but they are not scheduled and cannot be guaranteed. Herds may wait for hours or days, cross at different points, turn back, or move between Tanzania and Kenya multiple times. A strong itinerary allows enough nights to increase opportunity rather than promising a specific crossing.

Why stay longer

Three or four nights in the north are valuable during peak migration season because game-drive distances can be significant and crossing activity is unpredictable. Longer stays also create time for resident wildlife, landscapes and quieter sectors away from major gathering points.

High-end camps

The north contains some of Tanzania’s best-known luxury safari camps, including permanent and seasonal options positioned around Kogatende, Lamai and other prime wildlife areas. Property choice can strongly influence drive times to river sections.

Photography

The area offers more than crossings: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and plains game remain important. Photographers should consider a private vehicle and enough luggage allowance for camera equipment when using light aircraft.
