Why Western Serengeti & Grumeti
The western corridor stretches toward the Grumeti River and private reserves beyond the national park. It is associated with migration movement in the middle of the year and offers riverine woodland, rolling grassland and a different character from central or northern Serengeti.
Grumeti season
As herds move west and north after the southern calving period, the western corridor can become an important migration zone. Timing varies each year with rainfall. The Grumeti River crossings are generally different in scale from the Mara River but remain an important part of the ecosystem.
Private reserves
Some of Tanzania’s most exclusive safari properties are located in private concessions bordering the western Serengeti. These areas can provide very high service levels and additional activities depending on reserve rules.
Landscape and wildlife
Riverine forest, open plains and woodland create habitat for lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe and large numbers of plains game. The area can be particularly attractive to travelers seeking a quieter high-end safari.
Combining regions
Western Serengeti can be combined with Central Serengeti by road or with other regions by scheduled or charter flight. It is best included when season and accommodation choice support the extra travel time.
