Northern Tanzania Safari Guide

Northern Tanzania is the country’s best-known safari circuit because several very different wildlife areas can be connected by road and short scheduled flights. Arusha is the gateway; Tarangire brings baobab woodland and large elephant populations; Lake Manyara adds Rift Valley forest and birdlife; Ngorongoro provides a concentrated crater-floor safari; and the Serengeti adds scale, big cats and seasonal migration.

How the circuit fits together A short safari may link Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro in four or five days, but the strongest itineraries allow more time. Six to eight days creates room for two nights in the Serengeti and avoids turning every morning into a transfer. Ten days gives space for specialist interests such as birding, photography or a second Serengeti region.

Road safari versus fly-in Driving makes sense because the landscape changes gradually and several parks sit on the same route. Flying becomes useful when time is limited or when the itinerary includes Northern Serengeti, where the road from Arusha is long. Many high-end trips combine both: road through Tarangire and Ngorongoro, then a light aircraft out of the Serengeti.

Choosing accommodation Location matters as much as room category. A lodge outside a park may cost less but add commuting time. A camp deep inside the Serengeti may cost more but place you on game drive as soon as you leave camp. The best choice is the one that supports the wildlife plan for your month of travel.

How many days Three to four days is compact. Five to six days is a practical first safari. Seven to eight days is more comfortable. Nine to twelve days allows deeper Serengeti exploration, specialist photography, birding or seasonal migration sectors. Afrika Porini uses packages as starting frameworks and adjusts the final route after dates and priorities are known.
