When to Visit Northern Tanzania

Northern Tanzania works year-round, but the character of the safari changes sharply with season.

Northern Tanzania works year-round, but the character of the safari changes sharply with season.

June to October The main dry season brings thinner vegetation and stronger concentration around water in places such as Tarangire. Northern Serengeti becomes important for migration planning from roughly July through October.

November and December Short rains refresh the landscape. Wildlife remains strong in Central Serengeti and the southern migration may begin building as herds move toward fresh grazing.

January to March Ndutu and the southern plains are the headline region for calving-season safaris. Green landscapes, newborn animals and predator activity make this a favorite period for photographers.

April and May The long-rain period can mean wetter roads and some seasonal camp closures, but it also brings lower visitor density, dramatic skies and beautiful landscapes. Exact suitability depends on the parks and properties selected.

The practical answer There is no single best month for every traveler. The best period depends on whether your priority is migration, photography, dry-season wildlife concentration, birding, value or quieter parks.
